Berwyn South School District 100 provides a comprehensive educational program that focuses on college and career readiness while encouraging students to be active learners.  The district’s literacy and math curriculum align with the Illinois Learning Standards, which are based on the Common Core State Standards. District 100 has a scope and sequence that provides clear and consistent expectations of what students should know and be able to do at each grade level.

Our science curriculum is based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and the social science curriculum covers topics based on Illinois Learning Standards. The curriculum in all content areas and exploratory courses is designed to provide students with the knowledge necessary to master content standards while challenging them to reach their greatest academic potential. District 100 is committed to enriching the curriculum through exploration, creativity, and collaboration, and providing instruction based on the individual needs of every student.

Math

Mathematics instruction in District 100 follows and inquiry-based approach that promotes conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and problem-solving. In grades K-5, the primary resource is Bridges in Mathematics, which integrates core lessons, Work Places, and Number Corner to build fluency and reinforce key concepts throughout the year. Middle School students use Amplify Desmos Math to engage in interactive lessons that promote mathematical discussions, real-world application, and visual modeling.

Core mathematics instruction includes opportunities for students to solve problems in multiple ways, use visual models and manipulatives, and explain their reasoning through oral language. Teachers guide mathematical discussions, embed formative assessment throughout instruction, and use student thinking to make real-time decisions. Instruction incorporates the Mathematical Practices, such as making sense of problems, reasoning and attending to precision, with scaffolds in place to ensure all students can access and engage in rigorous content.

Literacy

Kindergarten through Fifth Grade uses Amplify CKLA and Caminos as their literacy resource.

Amplify CKLA/ Caminos was built with the principles of structured literacy and the science of reading at their core.  They consider the threads of Scarborough's Rope as they plan for instructional time, and help make sure that students have strong foundations in both Word Recognition (Skills Strand) and Language Comprehension (Knowledge Strand) as they become skilled readers in our schools. For our dual language and Spanish-speaking students, the Caminos curriculum will serve as a key resource.

Caminos is a parallel program to CKLA, designed to support language and literacy development in Spanish. This program helps ensure that our students are receiving rigorous, culturally responsive instruction that meets their linguistic needs.

Middle School uses Amplify ELA as their literacy resource.

Amplify ELA continues to build on the foundational skills learned in CKLA/Caminos, and extends students' literacy skills through complex texts. Students learn to analyze texts, discuss ideas and write constructed responses using text evidence and reasoning.
