Winter Weather Guidelines

I am hoping to help all parents better understand weather related issues at Hiawatha. Schools only operate 180 days a year, so we want to be sure that students are healthy and ready to learn throughout the school day.

Before School: Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders are expected to line up on the playground and will be brought in by their teachers at 8:25. There is a teacher in the breakfast room who will bring students outside who participated in the breakfast program. All students will be kept inside if:

-There is a new snowfall

-It is raining

-It is below zero wind chill

At Recess: Students participate in a 20 minute recess on the playground. We make sure that the students are dressed for the weather. We have indoor recess if:

-There is a new snowfall

-It is raining

-It is below zero wind chill

It is very unlikely that the South Berwyn schools will close for bad weather. We have closed once in the past 10 years. So please plan for your child to be at school. If the school is closed, the announcement will be on TV and radio stations. A message will be on the Hiawatha phone lines before 8 am for school closing.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.
