Me gusta celebrar mucho mi cultura. Me siento bien cuando estoy con
toda mi familia.
Translation: (submitted
in Spanish)
In Mexico they celebrate the Day of the
Dead. This reminds me of my great-grandmother who lived in Mexico
City. When I went to visit her, I went with my grandmother…I always
remember her on that day.
We celebrated New Years at my grandmother’s
house. My uncle, aunt and cousins were there. We stayed up all
night while we celebrated the New Year….
When it was twelve midnight we celebrated
the New Year as they do in Mexico and here too. I like to celebrate
my culture very much. I feel good when I am with all of my family.

Being Hispanic in Berwyn means hardworking
people, large family parties, and Mexican food… We have large
parties like cotillions, weddings and birthdays…The food is one of
my favorite things. I like my family’s “mole” because it tastes
good. I like pozole and menudo that my mom makes at the parties.
We also have other food like tacos and tamales. It smells good.
Translation:
Ser hispano en Berwyn
significa gente trabajadora, fiestas grandes de familias y comida
Mexicana…
Huelen sabrosas.

El fútbol es divertido y mi
jugador favorito es Omar Bravo. El es hispano como yo. Me gusta
Translation:
Football soccer is a lot of fun and my
favorite placer is Omar Bravo. He is Hispanic like me. I like
Ronladinho who is a good player from Brazil…
I would like to be a pediatrician when I
grow up because I like babies. I want to go to the University and
earn scholarships and work hard to become a pediatrician.

Translation:
I have lived one year in Berwyn. It is very
peaceful here. I am from Acambaro, Guanajuato, México. To me,
being Hispanic in Berwyn means that one can continue with their
Hispanic culture. I am very proud of my culture because I am
Mexican.
Being Mexican reminds me of my favorite
foods like pozole, pambasos and enchiladas. When my mother makes
this food the flavors remind me of my country.
I remember Mexican Independence Day because
all of my cousins always dress with the colors of the flag. That
day we went to Los Comales (restaurant) with my uncles and cousins
to celebrate. We make food almost like the colors of the Mexican
flag. My mother puts pimento in the middle to make it look like the
eagle.
My language is spoken at my school and in my
house although, I am learning English. This is what it means to me
to be Hispanic in Berwyn.

comemos comida mexicana.
Translation: What we celebrate in Mexico is
Mexican Independence Day, we celebrate it on September 16th.

… For me January is one of our favorite
holidays because it has the Three Kings Day, we make a delicious
rosca (ring of bread). We put small plastic babies to see who makes
tamales. (This is a custom where the family members slice a piece
of a bakery ring that contains baby figurines, whoever gets one has
to provide a meal at a later day, sometimes there are more than one,
so they share the expense)…
The thing I like to do the most is participate
in the 5 de mayo. I like that they think of doing Mexican stuff.
But the thing I like the most about being a Hispanic in Berwyn is
that they accept Hispanics.
Traduccion:

alegre.

…for me the Hispanic month is something that

- Por todas nuestras
tradiciones que tenemos por mis antepasados
- Estoy orgulloso porque
soy nacido en México
- Porque tenemos nuestro
idioma
Translation:
My pride in being Hispanic
- For all of our traditions that we have
from our forefathers
- I’m proud because I was born in Mexico
- Because we have our own language
- I feel lucky because not everyone gets
to be Hispanic

Hispanics brought music to dance to like Salsa,
Bachata, Spanish Hip Hop and Spanish Rap. Hispanics also brought
traditional dances… Hispanics like Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Daddy
Yankee, Pitbull and Nina Sky are awesome, talented and creative
singers. George Lopez is known for his TV comedy show…Hispanics is
what it’s all about, they are hard workers that fight for a better
life and a better tomorrow.
Translation:
Daddy Yankee, Pitbull and Nina Sky son formidables cantantes,
talentosos y cantantes creativos.

Translation:
I am very proud because this month is our
month, the Mexicans or Hispanics…Well the one thing that I remember
is that in Mexico I used to go with my grandmother to milk the
calves and I also remember that they taught me how to cook things
like chilaquiles, stuffed peppers and other things. They also gave
me a horse and I remember when I used to run horse races with my
cousins, one time I was beating my cousin but I fell and then we all
laughed that day. We also used to go where there was some clay and
made little pots, well those are my memories, thank you for reading
my story.
Freedom Grade 8: B.J.P.
Translation:
..it doesn’t matter where we’re from but
rather that we share the same longing feeling and brotherhood and
that we left our country for one reason or another leaving our
roots, our memories, many of us our family, but what is important is
that as Hispanics we have earned an important role in this society
because being Hispanic gives us the fighting spirit of perseverance
and triumph.

"5 DE
MAYO"/MOTHER'S DAY CELEBRATION 2009
The program was
held Friday May 8th at
Morton West High
School
May 5th celebrates an important Mexican victory against the powerful
and sophisticated French army. It
is often confused with Mexican Independence Day, which occurs on September 16th.
The date lends itself to celebrations in the schools, testing is done and
the end of the year is close at hand thereby allowing teachers and students time
to practice and share their culture in the schools.
Our District 100 Bilingual students and staff take this opportunity to
celebrate the diversity from their countries through song and dance

Please take time to view and enjoy some of the students in our district
dressed in folkloric attire. Each
year the turnout gets bigger and better! Enjoy!
